Cannabis In Home Photo Session with Nina and Maddy

What if I told you that you could have a comfortable cannabis in home photo session? As a photographer in OKC, I’ve had the pleasure of photographing Nina and Maddy with this type of session before!

Set in the comfort and privacy of your own home, a photo shoot like this can be a unique way to photograph your love as a couple.

Before we dive in, though, I did want to urge you to contact local representatives about releasing those in prison for cannabis. You can click here to learn more.

Meet the Couple: Nina and Maddy

These two cool kids met on Tinder, and it was love at first swipe! As certified homebodies, Nina and Maddy love nothing more than to spend their evenings together at home, getting some delicious takeout, rolling up a joint, and settling in for a movie.

Tips for a Cannabis In Home Photo Session

Now that you’ve been introduced to the faces behind the photos, let’s dive into some tips for having a cannabis in home photo session.

Create a comfortable environment

First things first, be sure to create a comfortable environment. For instance, consider sitting over by your sofa in your living room instead of on a hard, uncomfortable chair. Make sure that the area you’re in is comfortable enough for a photo session.

You can also have fun with this! Consider taking some photos in one spot in your house and then maybe moving to another location in your home. Where would you normally hang out in your home? Pick a place that’s meaningful to you that you would want to be photographed!

Try out reflective surfaces

This is one of the more artistic tips, but you can try out reflective surfaces. Playing around with objects like mirrors or glass tables can provide a unique touch and visual appeal to your photos.

Reflections like this can also help to create a certain mood or atmosphere for your photos, whether it’s a dreamy, surreal effect or a more sharp and modern look. Reflective surfaces are also great when it comes to telling a story or conveying a message through your photos, like the perception of cannabis use.

Use natural lighting

Using natural lighting ensures that the truest and most authentic moment is photographed. Natural light is super soft and can help bring out more delicate details while casting gentle shadows to create a serene and calming atmosphere.

Natural light does vary throughout the day, which can offer a range of different moods and atmospheres. For instance, sunrise can feel peaceful, while sunset can provide a feeling of warmth.

Wear comfortable clothing

As with any photo session, please wear comfortable clothing! For one, it will make you feel more like yourself (and more relaxed), but it can also contribute to the overall feeling of the photos. Comfortable clothing will show how relaxed you are.

When it comes to a cannabis in home photo session, naturalness is really key in capturing moments that are most authentic and reflect your personality. Just act like you’re chilling at home, relaxing and letting loose, and your photographer will showcase the moment exactly how it is!

Incorporate green & greenery

Incorporating the color green and additional greenery like plants into your session can really help to elevate your photos. For one, it will help to create a really harmonious aesthetic and exude a feeling of tranquility in your photos. This could even be as simple as getting photos next to your house plants if you have any.

Plus, using green in your photos is a subtle way to complement the cannabis used in the shoot. It will help to create visually cohesive and balanced images while leaning into a color that’s commonly associated with it.

Play with props

Let’s be honest; it can be awkward being in front of a camera! Even though I’m always behind the camera, trust me when I say I know how awkward it can feel. The solution? Use props! The same goes for an in home photo session like this.

Props can range from cannabis-related ones like pipes, rolling papers, grinders, bongs, etc., to more personal ones that just showcase your interest. Maybe you always like to vibe out with a record player – include that! Put a vinyl onto your record player during your shoot while smoke billows around you. This will add a unique visual twist to your photos while also helping to tell a more comprehensive story.

Props can either serve as focal points or as complementary elements in your photos. They can also, again, help with making you feel more comfortable in front of the camera by giving you something to interact with. You can just interact and forget someone is even taking your photo!

Oh, and don’t forget the snacks! Whether it’s hot Cheetos or mozzarella sticks, food can be a great prop to have on hand.

Experiment with smoke

This one may seem like a given, but another tip is to be sure to experiment with smoke. It will add an ethereal quality to the images. We did this during the session that I photographed, and the photos came out phenomenal.

Smoke is pretty fluid in nature, which can create a captivating visual and add a sense of mystery and movement to your photos. Smoke curls and swirls a bit, which can be mesmerizing depending on how it moves.

Plus, capturing how smoke moves against a contrasting background can really highlight it and create a more atmospheric and moody photograph. It’s really versatile, too, and can be used to create a more ethereal-leaning photo that’s soft and dreamy or can be more dense, creating a dramatic effect.

Utilize shadows

Utilizing shadows in your cannabis photo session can add more drama and depth to your photos, too. Try playing around with them with your photographer!

By strategically positioning the light, you can focus on specific textures or details that may not have been accentuated before. The shadows can also either soften or even intensify the scene overall, creating a more dynamic composition that can draw the viewer’s attention to specific aspects of the photo.

Focus on the details

Last but certainly not least, be sure to focus on the details. Now, this doesn’t even have to necessarily be the details of your props. It could be the details of you and your partner, especially if you’re not doing the photoshoot alone. Whether it’s a small hand-written note or even the two of you laughing, it’s worth getting a photograph of it.

One thing to remember with a session like this is that emphasizing details can showcase the small parts of everyday life that honestly hold the most significance. By capturing something that may seem mundane, like a hand holding a joint or a shared smile, you’re showcasing a really relatable moment.
